Position: Director for the U.S.Carbon Cycle Science Program Office
Responsibilities: Dr. Hanson has served as Director for the interagency U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program since January 2005. He recently served eight years as Executive Director of the JGOFS International Project Office in Bergen, Norway. In this position, he provided overall leadership in the daily operations of the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study, managing up to half million-dollar budget annually and a staff of three. He also contributed scientific, administrative and financial support to the Scientific Steering Committee in the investigation of past trends and emerging issues in global ocean biogeochemistry. He currently provides direct support to the chairpersons of the Carbon Cycle Interagency Working Group on matters such as annual budgets, financial issues, and funded projects inventories. He also represents the interagency group on carbon cycle science issues with the U.S. Climate Change Science Program and U.S. Climate Change bilateral agreements with identified carbon cycle science. Hanson also acts as a liaison with national and international carbon cycle science programs. In other capacities, he supports the interagency working group in preparing topic white papers, science plans, and program accomplishments, analyzing the scope of funded U.S. carbon cycle research projects, informing the interagency group on project status, needs, and opportunities for enhancing research coordination among research scientists and agencies, and communicating significant new findings to decision makers and the public.
